چکيده
The deterioration of old irrigation projects in Iraq has significantly reduced water-use efficiency and intensified environmental degradation, particularly in semi-arid regions. The Al-Dibouni Irrigation Project in Wassit Governorate exemplifies the operational challenges caused by aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and outdated engineering management. The primary aim of this research is to assess the current condition of the project and examine how the decline of its physical infrastructure affects operational efficiency and water delivery performance.
The study employs field inspections, soil and water sampling, GIS and remote sensing analyses, and farmer surveys to evaluate technical, operational, and environmental conditions. The results reveal major issues such as canal leakage, sedimentation, pump inefficiency, and increasing soil salinity and waterlogging. Based on these findings, a sustainable engineering management framework is proposed to guide rehabilitation, modernization, and environmental protection efforts. The outcomes provide practical recommendations for decision-makers and a transferable methodological model for similar irrigation systems in Iraq.
