  • چکيده
    The deterioration of old irrigation projects in Iraq has significantly reduced water-use efficiency an‎d intensified environmental degradation, particularly in semi-arid regions. The Al-Dibouni Irrigation Project in Wassit Governorate exemplifies the operational challenges caused by aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, an‎d outdated engineering management. The primary aim of this research is to assess the current condition of the project an‎d examine how the decline of its physical infrastructure affects operational efficiency an‎d water delivery performance. The study employs field inspections, soil an‎d water sampling, GIS an‎d remote sensing analyses, an‎d farmer surveys to eva‎luate technical, operational, an‎d environmental conditions. The results reveal major issues such as canal leakage, sedimentation, pump inefficiency, an‎d increasing soil salinity an‎d waterlogging. Based on these findings, a sustainable engineering management framework is proposed to guide rehabilitation, modernization, an‎d environmental protection efforts. The outcomes provide practical recommendations for decision-makers an‎d a transferable methodological model for similar irrigation systems in Iraq.
