چکيده
The escalating global water crisis necessitates the development of highly efficient, durable, and sustainable materials for removing complex contaminants, including heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. Traditional adsorbent technologies suffer from finite lifetimes, structural degradation, and high regeneration energy demands. This exhaustive technical review introduces Self Healing Adsorbents as a transformative material class designed to circumvent these limitations by spontaneously or stimulus triggered repairing mechanical damage and restoring structural integrity and functional performance.
The efficacy of these materials is rooted in diverse and complex chemical mechanisms, broadly categorized into Intrinsic (e.g., reversible covalent bonds, metal
ligand coordination) and Extrinsic (e.g., microencapsulation, vascular networks) healing strategies. Key material platforms reviewed include Polymer Based Adsorbents utilizing reversible cross linking (e.g., Diels Alder cycloaddition) for structural restoration, Metal organic Frameworks (MOFs) exploiting dynamic metal
ligand bonds for self regeneration, Hydrogels leveraging thermo responsive LCST phase transitions for controlled swelling and collapse, and Carbon Based Biochars modified for enhanced contaminant affinity.
Specific applications demonstrate exceptional performance: functionalized polymers (Ppy PEI) achieve rapid kinetics for divalent lead ( Pb2+ ) removal via complexation, and modified biochar effectively captures hexavalent chromium ( Cr ( VI ) ). The combination of high adsorption capacity, stimuli responsive regeneration, and inherent durability establishes self healing adsorbents as an essential technology for future sustainable environmental remediation and resource recovery systems.
