چکيده
The increasing anthropogenic CO2 emissions due to the rapid development of industries and the population have increased the necessity of massive mitigation efforts in the form of carbon capture and storage (CCS). Deep formations CO2 storage is an important element of CCS, although the success of the processes is determined by stringent screening and ranking of the potential storage locations based on both technical and economic factors. The article is a literature survey of the geological solutions to CO2 sequestration, which can be deep saline aquifers, depleted oil and gas fields, unmineable coal seams, basalt, and clastic reservoirs, and a summary of the key CO2 trapping mechanisms that regulate the long-term storage of CO2. It then lists and explains the key site selection parameters which include storage capacity, injectivity, reservoir and caprock integrity (including wells and faults), depth, porosity, permeability, pressure conditions, and other important economic factors including the scale of the source, distance between the emission points and infrastructure needs. The essence of the review is centered on the multi-criteria decision making and associated techniques applied in ranking storage sites, such as Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), TOPSIS, TODIM, MULTIMOORA, eigenvalue-based, and the multi-stage criteria-based screening models. Comparative study of published case studies underscores the impact of various weighting schemes, availability of data as well as the treatment of uncertainty on the final ranking of candidate sites.
