چکيده
The construction industry uses a huge amount of the world’s energy, water, and raw materials more than almost any other sector. This heavy use comes at a high cost to the environment and puts pressure on already limited resources, especially in hot and dry regions like the Middle East. While many studies look at energy, water, or materials separately, real progress happens when these three are managed together, as one connected system.
This seminar explores how construction projects can become more sustainable by making smarter choices about how energy, water, and materials are used, from the early design stage all the way through to building operation and even demolition. It draws on recent research and real examples from places like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, where extreme heat, dust, and water scarcity create big challenges.
Topics covered include practical strategies like using recycled or locally sourced materials, adopting passive cooling instead of relying only on-air conditioning, harvesting rainwater (even in dry areas), and reusing greywater on site. The seminar also looks at tools that help teams make better decisions, such as; Building Information Modeling (BIM), life cycle assessment (LCA), and multi-criteria decision methods like AHP and TOPSIS.
But technology alone is not enough. The biggest barriers often come from weak regulations, lack of awareness among contractors, high upfront costs, and limited access to training or data. That is why the seminar also highlights the need for stronger policies, better collaboration between architects, engineers, and clients, and more pilot projects that prove sustainable approaches can work, and save money in real-world conditions.
Ultimately, this seminar doesn’t aim to present a perfect solution, but to show that small, well-coordinated changes, backed by the right tools and mindset, can add up to big improvements. The goal is simple: build structures that meet today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
