Abstract:
Earned value management is one of the tools used for monitoring the progress and costs of the project and is composed of several factors. The outputs of this system are usually used as warning signs for the implementation of preventive and corrective actions. EVM indices are point estimates which presents the performance of the project at a given reporting instance. Therefore, they do not provide information about project performance variation and thus would not capture the trend of project performance. In order to overcome this imperfection, System dynamics methodology has been applied for this purpose.
In the present work, the activity of project monitoring has been treated as a general system and earned value management as a specific system for modeling and simulating the dynamics involved therein. A case study has been conducted on a real-world software project in an IT organization. The results show that the system of earned value management is highly influenced by variations in the estimated cost of unit effort, delay in an activity and estimated effort of work package.
