The use of I-shaped steel sections with perforated web that are known as castellated beams has widely used in recent decades, because of reduction in structural weight, which also results in reducing the cost of construction.
These sections are used as main structural elements in the industrial structures and also in entire structure of one floor that requires large bays such as warehouses, stores, parking lots, shops and ….
Due to the special shape and the beauty of the exposed castellated sections, they have been frequently used. This research is about optimization of castellated sections as structural elements in industrial structures and in particular is about castellated beams.
Nowadays new methods known as meta-heuristic algorithms are used in structural optimization. These methods are based on random search and they don’t have the problem of other methods with continuous or discrete objective functions. Enhanced whale optimization algorithm (EWOA) is one of the optimization algorithms based on hunting behavior of humpback whales.
In this research, castellated and cellular beams are analyzed in such a way that minimization of the constructional cost of the beams, considered as objective function for optimization. In order to achieve optimal design of the beams with optimal shape, size and number of holes, the enhanced whale optimization algorithm is applied by the Matlab software.
