In conventional low voltage networks, energy storage devices have been used mainly by end-users for peak shaving or as protection against short supply interruptions. With the advent of Microgrids and development of storage technology the role of this equipment has been continuously growing. Energy storage systems can help to increase the efficiency of supply and maintain the required power quality in the complex Microgrid environment. In renewable sources such as wind turbine and photovoltaic system, due to directly dependence the output power to weather conditions and wind speed, these systems have intermittent characteristic.
This intermittent power of renewable sources, can lead to severe problems, such as frequency oscillation and power fluctuation, reduction of power quality and reliability in point of common coupling. To deal with such problems as high penetration of variable renewable sources may bring about, it requires compensation methods for mitigating power fluctuation and stabilizing system frequency.
Whole of expressed problems, explain the necessity use of energy storage system and, more importantly, control of this equipment.
In this thesis, according to the recent published papers, different control strategies for the control of energy storage have been investigated and simulated, including the following:
• Energy storage control strategy to improve power quality and Energy management in low-voltage Microgrid in the presence of Photovoltaic system.
•Hierarchy control of power quality based on energy storage system on Microgrid in the presence of Wind Turbine.
Then based on these methods and use of other references a control strategy has been suggested that presented a general application of energy storage system for simultaneously harmonic, unbalance and reactive power compensation with power fluctuations reduction produced by distributed generation in Microgrid includes unbalance and nonlinear load, wind turbine and photovoltaic system with intermittent characteristic.
