Abstract:
Coastlines, including the most important phenomenon of earth’s surface that have dynamic nature and specification. In order to environmental management of coastal areas, be aware of the coastline is very momentous. So its monitoring reveals the coastline different characteristics. Periodic fluctuations in water level causes changes of coastline. This frequency or changes in the Caspian Sea and specially Gulf of Gorgan is high and world-renowned.
Therefore, to identify changes in the coastline of the Gulf of Gorgan, Landsat images from 1987 to 2014 were provided. After preparation of images and utilizes the band ratio and histogram thresholding methods, the coastline is detected and identified. Then, for prediction of coastline changes in year 2020, some cross section lines are considered in south and east of gulf. With “End Point Rate” and “Average of Rate” methods, annual rate of coastline change calculated and predicted.
To determine the actual coastline, the thresholding value on this images to Gorgan Bay, on the basis of trial and error was 24. In this thesis, evaluating the results of the two above predictive methods showed that the EPR method has accurate in predicting of future. Prediction offered for Gorgan Gulf coastline is evidence that the situation in next 6 years will be progressed close to 300 to 400 m.
