Abstract:
Structural approach to cities, from its initial application in urban design onwards, has faced changes in viewpoint and intervention type. Contemporary urban design, which attempts to eliminate past deficiencies, criticizes the mere consideration of cities' physical aspect based on this approach and with emphasis on multi-dimensional characteristic of this approach, introduces the spatial dimension as one of the major aspects of structuralism. Thus, the spatial structure of city is the indicator of urban structure's spatial dimension and the integrity criterion is maybe the most important goal to achieve solidarity in spatial structure. The integration between urban structure and different functional centers should be formed in order to highlight the role of each center in city structure. When this approach is applied in specific fields (contexts) like pilgrimage cities, the role of culture and pilgrimage feature, as an attitude and meaning, becomes an important challenge and from a comprehensive point of view, it can be studied and analyzed to find the best intervention method in these cities.
In literature review chapter, with a holistic (comprehensive) perspective, theoretical studies is provided in two parts: structure and culture. In the first part, the ideas and opinions of structuralism theorists is presented in two subdivisions - components and relationships – and spatial structure, solidarity and integration is studied and established as spatial dimensions of urban structure which is expressed in structural relations. On the other hand, in culture part, the sociological concept of culture, its effect on people and space, culture and urban identity and identification of pilgrimage concept in city with emphasis on its behavioral aspect, is reviewed. Contributions to integration of religious-pilgrimage centers is studied from the viewpoint of these approaches and effective factors on each of them has been conducted (extracted) by overlapping literature review and international experiences. Finally, the theoretical structure of study has been achieved by consolidation of all these factors. Based on this structure, Contributions to promoting integration between centers in structure of a pilgrimage city can be classified in four dimension: accessibility dimension including permeability and legibility, functional dimension including functional compatibility and functional dependence, social dimension including sociability and walkability and physical – spatial dimension including spatial hierarchy and integration.
In design part of study a problematic city area is studied in terms of dissociation in spatial structure of pilgrimage cities with specific customs and all the indicators mentioned above, are surveyed in this context. Case study encompasses the ancient fabric of Lar city and based on different surveys and methodologies, the problems and potentials of this area are identified in terms of integrity. Finally, based on these analysis, proposals are presented in order to improve the integration in spatial structure of this pilgrimage city between two particular structural center ( Jame mosque and Mir-ali-ebn-Hossein shrine).
