Abstract Academic writing has been the focus of attention in the last two decades. And as the research article abstracts play a crucial role in the academic milieu, this genre has been studied by many scholars. However, not much attention has been paid to studies that not only consider cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary differences but also take the influence of research article design into consideration. The purpose of this study is to shed light on how cross-disciplinary/cross-cultural differences and research article designs can manipulate research article rhetorical moves and their linguistic/textual realization. Therefore, 300 research article abstracts are studied based on the cross-cultural/cross-disciplinary differences in the way that they exploited research article abstracts rhetorical moves and their linguistic/textual realization on one hand; and 300 research article abstracts rhetorical moves are studied based on influence of their research article design, on the other hand. The findings prove the existence of rhetorical moves and their linguistic/textual realization differences due to the cross-cultural/ cross-disciplinary differences and also the research article design. There would be functional generic, pedagogical implications for this study along with benefits for ESP/EAP courses. Finally, it would be worthwhile if studies in larger scale be conducted on this issue.
