Abstract:
Nowadays, as the construction projects get larger and become more complex, managing them with traditional methods are difficult or sometimes incompetent. Passing deadlines and exceeding determined budgets in most of the construction projects are evidences of this axiom. Plan changes during the construction phase, reworks and lack of coordination between the parties involved in the projects impose excessive costs on the projects. Advancement of technology in computer simulations in recent years and the possibility of creation of virtual three-dimensional models with computers, along with development of information technology has affected construction industry, as well as other industries, profoundly. Building information modeling, therefore, as an efficient tool for optimization of planning and management of construction projects has revolutionized the construction industry in recent years. Building information model is a digital model of the real building which contains information of its characteristics. During the process of building information modeling all the plans of different disciplines, like structural designs, architectural designs, MEP and so forth, will be presented in form of digital three-dimensional models. Integrating models presented by different disciplines can lead to improvement of collaboration and coordination between the parties and reduction of errors and wastes and facilitation of planning optimization.
With respect to positive feedback of utilization of this method in various projects in different countries and long term planning of governments for deeper BIM implementation, apprising the current status of BIM in Iran for planning the future development and providing the requirements for its maturity seems necessary. Therefore, in this thesis current statues and barriers to adoption of BIM in Iran have been studied.
According to the results of this study, although a considerable amount of Iranian firms are using BIM tools, calculated BIM engagement index indicates that usage of BIM tools are at basic levels. Furthermore, assessment of the perception of the firms in the Iranian construction industry on the barriers affecting the adoption of building information modeling revealed that ‘awareness of the technology among industry stakeholders’ and ‘social and habitual resistance to change’ are the most significant barriers of BIM adoption in the Iranian Construction Industry. In the following, exploratory factor analysis has been used for determining the latent variables, and conceptual model was tested with confirmatory factor analysis. The findings revealed that the factor of role of the government in developing BIM has a positive impact on the factor of awareness of the construction industry and the factor of current statues of BIM adoption. Also, the factor of awareness of the construction industry has a positive impact on the factor of current statues of BIM adoption.
