Abstract:
Achieving success in a construction project is an important goal of project participants. While success means different things to different people. The concept of success remains vague among project participants, which makes it difficult to assess whether the performance of project is a success or failure. The success factors have a complex structure arising from their complex interactions. Although several researches have been conducted in the area of identifying and analyzing different success factors in construction projects, none of them account for the complex inter-related structure of different success factors. In this research, fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) as a powerful inference engine in simulation of complex causal relationships is used to model the success factors. Using the proposed FCM approach, the critical success factors are analyzed and prioritized taking account of their complex inter-related structure. The performance of the proposed FCM model is evaluated by implementing it in highway projects. Based on the results of the dynamic analysis of the FCM model the most impressive success factors in highway projects are “Competent and experienced project manager”, “Efficient top management’s supports”, “Stable and suitable economic condition”, “Clear definition and prioritization of project scopes and goals”, “Clear and detailed written contract”.
