Considering changes in education methods, the need for new physical space, and improving inner and outer space connection in educational centers, ignored in most of contemporary schools, it appears crucial to take measures to develop and enhance the quality of learning space through constructing new infill developments and to improve the quality of outdoor space in important monuments for responding the student’s needs. There are some schools with historical and training precedence, one amongst is the famous Alborz high school in Tehran. The purpose of current study is to present the design of Alborz high school extension, and developing open space as well as its internal and external space communication, which is essential for the value of this building and the ecological issues we are facing today. Therefore, this research is looking for such development in which the infill and open spaces can have great relationship with the valuable historical building in order to grow the quality of the historical educational space. A combination of survey method, ethnographic research method, and field observations (by questionnaire and interviewing with a hundred of students and teachers), were used to find out the most important factors in designing and their prioritization as well. The results of this study indicate that the extension of open space and its incorporation to the spaces of heritage building could have positive effects on educational environment as well as improving the quality of physical spaces. Finally, it has been tried to represent the design based upon the above conclusion.
