Due to development of expansion of landfills around cities and populated places during recent years, studying the mechanical performance of municipal solid wastes is suggested as one of the discussable topics in environmental geo-technics. Expansion of the capacity of landfills for higher capacity of wastes due to limit of land area, change in their usage upon completion of landfill capacity, necessity of resistance maintenance for gable roofs in active landfills and design of new landfills are the factors requiring the study of mechanical performance of wastes. The main purpose of this study is to review the effect of shape and amount of inert materials on shear strength of municipal solid wastes pile. For this purpose, samples of the new and aged municipals solid wastes were studied in the conditions of Kahrizak Landfill in Tehran. First, the basic properties of the samples such as elements of waste, granulation, humidity percentage and density were reviewed. In order to review the shear strength of waste, we used the results of large-scale triaxial tests completed in reinforced- undrained mode on the new and aged samples. At first the shear strength of new and aged samples without any inert materials were evaluated ; then the shear strength of samples included with 3 ranges of fractionated inert materials were measured.the fraction ranges are: 15% - 40% - 60% . The results suggest that inert materials of waste are one of the main parts supplying the strength of waste pile. The more fractioned inert materials, the more increase in shear strength.
