Abstract:
Matrix cracking is one of the most common damage mechanism in composite laminates. Many analytical models have been developed to determine the stress distribution, stiffness regardation at specific crack density and also crack propagation. In cases that there are two (or more) cracked plies, most reserachers have used the homogenization method to analyze and simulation the laminates. In this thesis matrix cracking has been studied in symmetric cross-ply composite laminates that have two 〖90〗^° cracked plies by variational method. To analyze the effects of matrix cracking on structure behavior, results of stress distribution, stiffness regardation and strain energy release rate which, are computed by two methods: homogenization method and simultaneous analysis method, have been compared. For improving accuracy of results, ply-refinement technique has been used in each method. Also stress distribution, stiffness regardation and strain energy release rate results of staggered and symmetric cracking pattern, are compared.
