Abstract
The idea of urban village as an approach to meet sustainability of habitats of various social and economic conditions is deemed as a way to develop urban and village sustainability. According to intact and soothing environment of villages compared to the crowded urban environment, increasing desire has been witnessed for living in village-like habitats with environmental, cultural and social benefits in addition to diversity in facilities and living opportunities. Accordingly, the idea of urban village may deemed as a suitable response to the mentioned human need. Neighborhood of Darakeh located north of Tehran expands between mountain and desert. Stretching along south foot of the mountain Alborz, Darakeh is taken into account as the desired site for urban village development. It seems necessary to organize Darakeh as a significant part of urban environment via integration of positive features including closeness to nature, calmness, autonomy, identity and intimacy, and urban-like facilities. To this end, to use the idea of urban village aimed at integration of urban and village positive features can be a good pattern for development of periurban environments. The current study is organized in 5 chapters. The first chapter is aimed at providing the statement of the problem, necessity and objectives of the research as well as the research questions. This chapter summarizes the research methodology as well. The methodology chosen to do the study is of descriptive-analytical nature which is based on case study. Data have been collected using questionnaires distributed in Darakeh neighborhood. The second and third chapters focus upon theoretical bases related to the idea of urban village. These two chapters are aimed to investigate the case studies complied from all around the world, and to evaluate fundamental features of each case in terms of economic, social, environmental and physical aspects in order to introduce a theoretical framework at the end of the third chapter. Accordingly, the most significant measures of urban village including environmental, social-cultural, economic and physical features have been introduced for each measure mentioned previously. At the next stage, the evaluation of neighborhood condition including environmental, social, cultural, economic and physical features form the sustainability point of view, has been conducted. The fifth chapter the development perspective of Darakeh, developmental aims, approaches and design options foe urban village have been provided according to analysis and evaluations. According to evaluations, especially those conducted using field research and questionnaire, it is indicated that Drakeh is a suitable site in terms of social-economic features but undesirable in terms of environmental and physical indices. According to field research and analysis of the most highlighted problems of Drake inhabitants, growing legal and illegal civil works and pollution as well as noise can be enumerated as the most frequently mentioned problems. In the following, approaches and policies have been introduced for Drakeh neighborhood based on the current condition. Some plans and design have been provided to make Darkeh an urban village as well.
