Building Information Modeling (BIM) is proven to be a powerful tool for visualization and data integration throughout the different stages of construction projects which can help identifying and preventing errors and increasing efficiency. On the other hand, considering the importance of scheduling and its direct role in causing or preventing delays in the project, generating an integrated BIM-based scheduling system is of great importance; since it would be able to extract the data directly from the BIM model and use it as the input data for the simulation engine. Using simulation as a project planning tool helps the project schedule to be more precise by paying attention to more details and uncertainties. However, common project scheduling methods such as Critical Path Method (CPM), come with many limitations such as constant task durations, lack of consideration for resource limitations, being unable to schedule repetitive tasks precisely, etc., which lead to poor project planning and scheduling.
This study presents a method for integrating project schedule, BIM model and simulation engine which is able to generate project schedule automatically from the information of the BIM model. Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) is applied to simulate the construction process. Finally, the system is evaluated by being utilized for generation of a schedule for an underpass project and comparison of the results with project-specific real information. Thus, an integrated approach in this area is introduced from which the 4D model of the said project can be produced automatically.
