Carbon and carbonaceous bodies have great importance in today’s advanced industries, such as refractory and electronic industries for application in areas such as melting crucibles and lithium-ion batteries. Forming of this bodies with aqueous routes, because of intrinsic and different properties, such as poor wettability and stability in water, makes use of carbon with serious problems. The aim of this research was producing this bodies with Gelcasting route, which is relatively new and potent methods. Also effective parameters such as additives, proposed processes for modification of materials behaviors and feasibility of producing carbonaceous with this method studied and mentioned parameters have been studied and tested. In the first step, for reaching to a proper slurry, stability of carbon black and graphite in aqueous solution have been studied in the various solid loadings, pH and tween 80 additives. Also other methods of modification of materials behavior like surface oxidation, adding nanosilica sol used and eventually, amount of optimum parameters for mentioned factors has been earned. It observed that with use of graphite as carbonaceous source and in solid loadings of 45 and 50 wt%, a proper slurry can be prepared. For preparing this suspension, use of nanosilica sol with amount of 2.5 wt% of solid loading, is necessary and best result has been reached among other experimented methods in modification of Rheological and wettability of graphite particles in suspension. Based on conducted experiments, these parameters causes improvement in mechanical strength of prepared raw bodies relative to other bodies prepared via carbon black with similar parameters. Such that, strength of these bodies increased from about 1 MPa to 14 MPa. Microscopically studies clearly shows polymeric network in the raw parts which is responsible in providing strength and preparing forming conditions for graphite bodies in Gelcasting method.
