The main objective of this thesis is to analyze and investigate the effect of the presence of hazardous material on the severity of accidents at highway-railway grade crossings. The research method in this thesis is a case study and includes three studies in Iran and the United States. Investigation and analysis of the severity of accidents involving hazardous materail at the HRGCs are divided into different stages and phases. In the first stage, the purpose of obtaining hazard zones in different scenarios is from the collision of the train and the road vehicle. At this stage, the event modeling software is used. Subsequently, using the software of the geographic systems of the population affected by each scenario, it is identified in the next step. By calculating the consequences of accidents in the first two and a half years and comparing the results, it was found that, in general, the consequences of the accident in the second half of the year are more than the first half of the year. Also, with regard to the level of road and rail crossings in terms of population and vulnerable places of any accident, it can turn into a catastrophe. The results of this study suggest that since the wind direction plays a decisive role in the elongation of the affected area and as a result of the population, it is recommended that emergency responders to the incidents should be considered when incident occurs. Prioritize evacuation and cleaning according to wind direction. Also, wagons are designed to make it difficult to increase the temperature of the dangerous goods within it.
