Over the course of nearly three decades, the presence of the Department of Art and Architecture of Yazd University in Sahl-ebne-Ali neighborhood has been studied and evaluated. The continuous presence in the environment shows that even though this complex has been fortunate in some sensual and qualitative aspects, however, it has been less successful in responding to functional requirements both in the external and internal dimensions. Considering the importance of the wholeness and the formation of the complex in its quality and efficiency, as well as the increasing number of students, the need for physical development is felt through a well-structured program in line with the objectives of preservation, conservation, revitalization.
On the other hand, one of the main needs of the current Yazd historic houses especially the Department of Arts and Architecture is flexible spaces (both in terms of performance and in terms of climate issues) for revitalization. Flexibility is one of the key concepts in the alphabet of the formation of Iranian architecture. The idea of flexibility and convertibility in the historical architecture of Iran can be noticed in examples such as Orosy, Posh etc. Multifunctional space can be seen both in the plan and in the structure.
Therefore, in the research carried out for this project, first descriptions and analysis of the historical houses of Yazd city has been presented and then the details of the additive convertible roof is outlined. The research suggests that in order to adapt to the use of the Department, the houses of Kasmaei and Elliein should be revitalized with the proposed restoration plan and the definition of proper use of the spaces. In such a way, that it meets both the Department’s new needs and preserves the identity, values and authenticity of the structure and the surrounding fabric and by designing an additive convertible roof, flexible, functional, efficient spaces are added to the collections at the Department.
