Rock bolts are one of the most effective and economical preservatives in rock excavations. Much of this issue is allocated rebar steel. But due to the major disadvantages of steel, today, FRP rebars are largely replaced by steel bars worldwide and Many of the damages caused by the weakness of the steel in the structure have been resolved.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics and technical characteristics of Fiberglass Reinforced polymer (FRP) Rock¬ Bolt and their comparison with Steel type.
In this research, the performance of Tensile, Bending and Pullout tests on both types of rebar was investigated. Also, after performing a laboratory test and analyzing the results, Pullout test in the under construction tunnel for a more accurate examination and feasibility study of the replacement of this type of maintenance system was carried out and finally, by comparing the economics of these two types of rebar, the results and conclusions were analyzed.
By analyzing the data and the results of the accomplished tests, FRP rock bolts had more tensile strength and pullout strength than steel and also in economical comparison, FRP bolts will be cost-effective in the long term. So this type of bolts can be a good alternative to Steel rock bolts and even under certain conditions, Fiberglass bolts must certainly be used.
