Turbo machines are the most important equipment and pump has been used a lot in any industry, as it is the heart of every industrial site and consumes a noticeably big part of energy. Therefore, it seems that acknowledging the way of working and applying pumps is so crucial. In the advanced level, knowing how to design and optimize them is important. Pumps has a lot of types with special applications. It is usable in various industries like in oil and gas industry, water desalination, agriculture industries. Its application is for transferring fluids with high and low viscosity. Type of the fluid, working pressure and the capacity are three of the most important criteria in choosing the most appropriate type of pumps. Centrifugal pumps are the most common type. In this thesis, different types of pumps, especially the centrifugal type, will be introduced. In the following, designing principles of volute casing are mentioned.
A centrifugal pumps are designed and different shapes of volute casing are designed. Modeling and simulation of all hydraulic parts of the pump are done. Different shapes of volute casing are analyzed numerically, in order to evaluate the efficiency of each of them. The one with the highest efficiency are introduced. The flow analysis indicates that with the modification of the original geometry of the volute casing, with trapezoidal cross section, the pump head and efficiency increases compared to the other cross sections. Also, designing Volute casing according to the conservation of angular momentum theory is more useful than constant velocity because the casing dimensions become noticeably smaller than designed casing according to constant velocity theory.
