Abstract:
Development in its authentic sense means the shift in criteria of a system in a way that provides a quality more favorable than before and according to the need of that time. The criteria of progress in a city are constantly changing according to existing conditions and needs. The development of campuses of universities within a city, as the large and influential part in the organization of urban spaces, also are included. Universities around the world have made so many changes, regarding their purposes, to their physical appearances and spaces from the beginning of their formation (first generation) until now (third generation / entrepreneurs). For this reason, at different periods, they have been preparing plans for the organization and development of universities by which to assist them in forming the campus and physical shape according to goals of universities.
In Iran, universities are also trying to improve the space of their campuses by providing developmental plans, focusing on physical developments. In urban campuses, these programs actually expand the boundaries of universities through purchasing plaques around the university and constructing new buildings, but it's unclear whether this physical development is driven by demands, or an illusion of universities’ needs for a new space that requires a large amount of budgets. However, studies have demonstrated that in other countries, academic campuses in cities have chosen different paths for development. These universities have attempted to lead to entrepreneurial universities as well as harmonize with the sustainable development while they have being prepared their basic for their own developmental plans.
This study was conducted with an applied study of a case (Amir Kabir University of Technology), and reviewing the related literature to the topic has provided an appropriate model for the development of urban campuses, in order to respond to effective demands leading to the development of campus in the authentic sense of it. Therefore, it examines the way in which the actual capacity of the university campuses was used in some university campuses in Tehran, it becomes evident that the existing physical capacity was not fully utilized in these spaces, as well as physical, functional, economic, and traffic assessments. It is clear that the development of university campuses within the city around them is not justifiable. As a result of the studies, using the students' comments, a program for the development of Amir Kabir University of Technology has been presented. Creating a crucial body to transform universities into an entrepreneurial (third-generation) university and improving the quality of the campus is one of the main strategies of the program, which ultimately leads to introduce other thirty-nine separate plans. The definition of an entrepreneurship-oriented research training center (outside of Tehran), considering the criteria for sustainable development along with enhancing the quality of the university's current range, is one of the answers that this research has provided in response to their real needs. Also, some areas on this issue, including the precise adjustment of the model for the realization of third-generation universities, the transformation of educational planning, the development of sustainable development criteria at the university, etc., requires professional reviews in the form of other researches.
