In this research, we tried to evaluate the behavior of the mixture of carbonate sand with the tire chips by using large direct shear tests. For this purpose, tire chips with dimensions from 3 to 4.5 mm were used and the effect of adding 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% of the volume of the carbonate sand of Hormuz has been investigated. The results showed that the addition of tire chips to the carbonate sand of Hormuz reduced the minimum and maximum specific gravity and caused the mixture to be lightweight and reduces the porosity of the samples during consolidation and it reduces more by increasing the overhead. The tire chips in the size range of sand particles reduces the shear strength. Also, the addition of tire chips does not allow the peak point to be seen in the diagram, and as the horizontal displacement increases, the shear stress increases to reach its final value; in fact, the samples exhibit hardening behavior. Also, the behavior of the samples was not improved by the addition of more tire chips, or there was no improvement in the interval of displacement. However, the behavior of the samples was improved in the grain crushing and the samples exhibit more ductility.
