In the present research, recovery of REE (Lanthanum, Cerium, and Scandium) from red mud of Jajarm Alumina production plant was investigated. In order to ease recovery and extraction of above REEs, different hydrometallurgical and pyrometalurgical approaches were used to remove the main impurities.
Based on the results obtained from primary experiments, two approaches were used for Fe removal were used: In the first method the iron oxide was reduced using non-coking coal in which the reduced iron was magnetically separated. The second approach for iron removal was based on a hydrometallurgical route in which the removing of impurities such as Iron , Uranium and Thorium was carried out by baking the red mud in concentrated sulfuric acid and neutralizing by ammonium in pH=4.1 by which the removal efficiency of 98 percent was obtained.
Solvent extraction method was further employed to extract the REEs from purified solution. The extractant of D2EHPA in kerosene was used to separate the elements of Ce, La, and Sc from the solution. Based on the results of solvent extraction of REEs it was confirmed that under the conditions of pH = 2.5 and the ratio of O: A=1:1 the elements of La, Ce and Sc were extracted with 98% efficiency in one step.
