In recent years, environmental concern about overuse of natural resources
and energy, also increased production of waste and human sewage has put an
unprecedented pressure on the ecosystem, following these concerns, actions
among scientific and international communities was needed. In addition, other
concerns like food, health, justice and security, unemployment and etc.
threaten the human race, which can be added to previously mentioned items.
Therefore, these concerns created "sustainable development". Sustainable
development is development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainable development has three economic, social and environmental
aspects that must be taken into account simultaneously in order to apply this
concept. The environmental aspect is one of the most important aspects of
sustainable development that unfortunately have been given low priority in
decision-making and is sometimes overlooked because of the economic profits
and the need to meet basic social needs by governments, especially in
developing countries. In construction industry as recognized as one of the
largest consumers of energy and land resources, the importance of this
concern is twofold. Therefore, this research has attempted to provide an
innovative method for identifying, modeling environmental criteria of
sustainable development and prioritization them so that construction
managers and decision makers can make sustainable decisions with regard to
them.
In this study, environmental criteria of sustainable development were
identified through resource reviews and then, with the help of experts, the
paired relationships of criteria including their impact on each other were
allocated. Following, with the help of the DEMATEL method as one of the
multi-criteria decision making methods, the relationships between the criteria
previously obtained by the experts were processed. Direct and indirect criteria
were applied to each other until the last time, and finally a model was
obtained based on the sum of the effects of the criteria. In this way, the
criteria were prioritized based on their effect on the built model.
