Bus network design is the first measure of urban bus system management which is significant due to its effect on other measures. Existence of a bus network which supports the travel demand desirably in addition to appropriate timing patterns, fleet assignment and crew assignment results in an effective and economic bus network. An important issue in bus network designing is that the designed network should be practical in executive aspect in urban areas with the lowest changes compared to the current state and also it should optimize the intended objective function. Considering these subjects in designing process of a bus network, solves a lot of practical problems that prevent the implementation of a designed network in most of cities all around the world. In this research, redesigning a bus network is focused on, regarding the executive and operational conditions related to the current state of network. Based on this, the presented method tries to enhance the service condition of a bus system, considering the opinions of expertise and proposing a mechanism to maintain some parts of the current system. In this study, a method is developed based on Genetic algorithm and it consists of three measures, generating probable routes, designing the network by Genetic algorithm and route analysis in terms of functionality. The objective function of this study pursuits a way to minimize the waiting time of passengers, non-used seats – hour, route difference with the shortest route of the network and fleet size. Then, the bus network of Mashhad is investigated as a case study using the proposed method. The output network of this method has changed about 50% in comparison with the current network of Mashhad and the objective function has been enhanced for about 26%. Eventually, the proposed method got implemented on Mandl network to be evaluated and the network parameters have been compared with other significant studies on this network.
