Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the factors affecting the failure of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) with a focus on the case study in the polyethylene industry of Iran. To this end, the literature and texts on the subject are reviewed and then, after interviewing SME experts, eighteen emerging factors as contributing factors to the failure of SMEs based on various sources. Then, the significant effect of the introduced factors on SMEs' failure has been studied. At the interview stage, 6 experts were interviewed to discover the factors of failure to achieve theoretical saturation Then, using the questionnaire, the opinions and responses of 14 experts were used to categorize and determine the hierarchy of factors. After these steps, 18factors affecting SMEs failure in Iran were identified as follows: lack of motivation, lack of skill, lack of ability, inadequate personality traits, inappropriate economic factors, technological change, inappropriate government policies, relationships. With foreign countries, customers, competitors, financing issues (banks, etc.), suppliers, non-collaboration with networks, poor financial management and accounting, staffing issues, lack of collaboration between partners, marketing and sales, executive and production issues. Finally, by using interpretive structural modeling method, the ranking and identification of the communication and interaction factors are discussed also, the ranking of effective factors shows that the two factors of the individual characteristics of the manager, the inappropriate policies of the government in the failure of the companies and the medium in the polyethylene industry have a significant place. Finally, using the MICMAC method to analysis is carried the driving power and the degree of dependence, we investigate the influence and of each of the factors the results show that inappropriate government policies have the highest influence and least dependency among the failure factors. This means that this variable is the main factor contributing to the failure of SMEs.
