In this study, nZVI@Chitosan composite is prepared by a chemical reduction method and was used for simultaneous removal nitrate and humic acid. The structural properties of the nZVI@Chitosan composite were studied by several characterizations such as FT-IR, XRD, TEM, VSM and BET. The antibacterial activity of nZVI@Chitosan was evaluated in the case of E. coli and S. aureus by the disc diffusion method. The effect of five parameters [ pH, NO3 -concentration, HA concentration, constant time, amount of composite] on the simultaneous removal process of nitrate and humic acid was checked and optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) in 27 experiments and 5 levels. Maximum nitrate removal percentage (90%) and humic acid due to turbidity (98.9%) was obtained at initial humic acid concentration of 31 mg/l, initial nitrate concentration of 110 mg/l, composite dose of 0.098 g, contact time of 27 min and pH of 5.5. According to the experimental results of the present study, nZVI@Chitosan composite, which has good Biodegradability, high adsorption and regenerative properties and antibacterial properties, can be used to simultaneously remove nitrate and turbidity from humic acid. In addition, the composite is easily collected from the aqueous solution by the magnet due to its suitable magnetic property.
