The increase in world population, industrialization, over-consumption of natural resources, and the expansion of metropolises have caused global warming and are destroying diverse and mixed green spaces all over the world. When every square meter and its price is important, the only way to create greenery is to use vertical spaces. In this article, by examining some of the problems caused by the lack of green space in Tehran, an attempt was made to provide a solution using industrial design. First, the background of vertical gardens was studied, and then the advantages and possible disadvantages of vertical gardens were examined. Then, some successful and failed projects in different cities of the world were studied and their strengths and weaknesses were considered.
After that, using the stakeholder-centered design method, the stakeholders of this project were identified and human user groups (positive and negative) and non-human groups were studied through various means such as interviews, questionnaires, and observations. Finally, after studying the national documents, local laws, and climate of Tehran, suitable plant species were selected for this project, and in a study, by reviewing and comparing different irrigation methods, the most sustainable irrigation method was selected for them. Furthermore, electronics and Computer programming used to design and build a tool for a smart irrigation system.
Finally, after selecting Niayesh Highway as a pilot, three modular products were designed (Iranian-ancient, traditional-religious, and modern-futuristic), and using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the final product was selected and optimized. Plus, some added value presented for it. In addition, the limitations of this research were raised and suggestions were made for future studies and improvements to the final designed product.
