Urban spaces, in addition to meeting the needs of human beings, must have the appropriate quality and positive impact on them, so that when located in urban spaces, a sense of belonging and peace of mind is created in them. Squares can play an important role in improving the quality of urban spaces in various aspects, including the presence of the square, attachment to the square, the visual appeal of the square and the creation of collective memory.
Redesigning this type of urban space is a method that, while preserving the identity of the place and the values in it, turns it into a place with a higher presence than in the past. Increasing social interactions is one of the most important concerns of urban designers today. Squares represent the culture, customs and cultural assets of a city, so the presence of the population in it can lead to the spread and strengthening of this cultural factor. At present, the square is meant as a square and has only a traffic role and is not considered as an opportunity for social promotion.
New urbanism has been formed as a new approach to urban design and planning in critique of contemporary urban planning that has a scattered, inhuman and mechanistic pattern. This approach is a mixture of architectural styles, smart growth, opposition to sporadic development, and sustainable urban planning based on public transportation. Today, this approach guides the post-modern generation of designers and planners and is one of the most important approaches to urban planning in this century. The basic principles of this approach have been based on the application of traditional principles of sustainable urbanism in the humanistic urban planning of the past.
The purpose of this article is to introduce the new urbanism approach based on the humanistic attitude of traditional urbanism versus the automotive attitude of modern urbanism, and how to apply its principles in redesigning urban squares. We have introduced the used.
The present research was progressive and the research method used was mixed type. In the mixed method of obtaining the data, the data, as well as most of the required information have been prepared through field studies.
