The unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is installed in the distribution system to
simultaneously compensate for power quality problems on the load side and on the grid side.
By connecting the solar system to this equipment, the possibility of providing power from
renewable sources is added to its capabilities.
The role of an advanced and appropriate controller in adapting to network rough conditions
and climate change cannot be ignored. Proportional-integral-derivative controllers have been
able to control well in the various control schemes proposed for unified power quality
conditioners. Using the controllers of this family for the compensator connected to the solar
system may not be satisfactory in dynamic conditions, in addition, it will be difficult to adjust
the controller coefficients Therefore, the requirement to design a new controller for this
equipment is felt.
The development of fast microprocessors in the last decade has led to the use of predictive
controllers in power converters, which include a very wide range of controllers. One of these
controllers is model predictive control. The main feature of model predictive control is the
use of the system model to predict the future behavior of controlled variables. Predictions are
made to achieve optimal performance according to a predefined optimization criterion. One
of the advantages of model predictive control is that its concepts are very simple and
intuitive, and its implementation can be simple.
In this thesis, the circuit of unified power quality conditioner, photovoltaic solar system, and
maximum power point tracking methods are briefly reviewed and the design of model
predictive controller for unified power quality conditioner integrated to the solar system is
described in detail. The designed controller is simulated in MATLAB software. In order to
evaluate the performance of the model predictive controller, a proportional-integral controller
has been simulated in MATLAB software according to the information provided in the
reference articles, and the results of these two controllers have been compared.
