Abstract
Nowadays, because of the population growth and lack of resources, energy and environment play crucial roles in economy and politic parameters of each country. Therefore, engineers are looking for fabricate materials that lead to reduction in energy consumption during manufacturing, resulting in the reduction of final product’s cost. In general, process of brick production should be at 700 degrees Celsius. In this research, feasibility of using Zanjan zinc waste for making bricks, which is compatible with the environment, was investigated. For the brick production, Zanjan zinc waste was mixed with 161 Firoozkoh Sand and alkaline solution was then added in this mixture which was then cured in oven. Three different weight percentages, including 30, 40 and 50 % of sand were utilized for mixing. Sodium hydroxide as an alkaline solution with 5% concentration was also selected for the mixing process. The effects of various factors such as curing temperature, granular soil content and curing time were evaluated. Results showed that specimen containing 50% sand during 90 degree and 28-day curing conditions has a highest compressive strength, reaching at 19 Mpa.. Furthermore, water absorption results demonstrated that increasing granular soil contents decreases the absorption. XRD results also validated geopolymerization process. Overall, using Zanjan zinc waste has a strong potential for making environmentally friendly bricks according to ASTM-C62 and Iranian national building code (part 7).
