With excessive energy consumption around the world, using energy-saving strategies has become rather important. Many schools have been built in Tehran with a high energy consumption rate due to a lack of attention to fuel consumption optimization methods. Meanwhile, most of these buildings will still be functional in the next few decades. Also, considering the possibility the fuel price increases in future, will make energy consumption reduction more interesting even from an economic viewpoint. Unfortunately, many presented solutions for solving the energy crisis are focused on new buildings. Considering the high number of old school buildings in Tehran gives rise to the need of recognizing and presenting the most effective energy retrofitting methods for these schools. According to previous research studies, improving the building envelope performance will considerably improve thermal comfort and lead to energy savings. The current research focuses on different energy retrofitting methods specifically are implemented on the building envelope. In this regard, related solutions were identified and categorized, and finally, the best solutions were introduced. This research is a case study using the DesignBuilder software, based on the EnergyPlus energy simulator on an old school named Soroushو, located in Tehran, district 2. According to the results, reduction of primary energy demand is obtained through the implemented retrofit actions like utilizing building management systems such as creating a heating schedule, changing the envelope architectural details, external walls insulation, doors, and windows replacement, improving air leakage, and finally selecting the best solutions, will lead to a 92% decrease in early energy consumption of this building.
