In today's world, the rapid growth of population and urbanization, alongside the weaknesses of the related programs to land and dwellings, has made it possible to provide affordable and simultaneously sustainable housing for various social groups, especially people with lower income, as one of the most important challenges in society.
Dwelling and settlement always follow the economic, social, cultural, and climatic conditions of each region. The nature, extent of shortages, and aspects of housing needs vary according to the income groups of social groups, the number of family members, and lifestyle.
Accordingly, each of them demands different solutions due to their characteristics. Despite these different conditions and needs of the residents, one of the solutions to provide exclusive housing is the availability of affordable housing for all segments of society.
By exploring the indicators of affordable housing, it has been observed that one of the most important components of providing affordable housing for different strata is flexibility.
Flexibility has been considered a vital issue in the process of designing housing and residential spaces by so many architects around the world. Over time, the structure of families (for example, the birth of children or their marriage) changes, so as a result, the desires and expectations of the individuals will differ according to their place of residence and its characteristics. On the flip side, human nature is so diverse. Thus, if the dwellings meet the needs of their users, there will be no need to leave and move to another place to provide the new needs, and as a result, this would make the settlement more stable. Accordingly, this sustainability provides freshness, vitality, security, identity, comfort and increases residents' belonging to their dwellings.
Therefore, in this research, with the use of the documentary method as well as investigation of the current condition of the site, descriptively and analytically explore the related concepts to affordability for different strata, flexibility, the necessity and importance of applying it in the design process of today's housing.
Also, it has dealt with the results of applying such strategies in the design of residential complexes, and eventually, it has found that the necessity for social composition and balance in neighborhoods and residential complexes and the improving quality of human life, depending on the application of the categories of affordability and flexibility in the design process of dwellings.
