Infrastructures are the facilities and systems that serve a city or country and the facilities needed
to operate a community. Infrastructure projects are commonly characterized by costly and complex
equipment and machinery. Errors and lack of transparency in project information and documents
are the main reasons for stopping and delaying infrastructure projects. BIM creates an effective
process by making the data transparent and performs the necessary designs, which allow
visualization and simulation, and these simulations make the project information transparent and
thus minimize the negative effects. Researches have shown that BIM causes increases
productivity, reduces wasted time, better and more efficient management, optimal use of capital,
time. Construction companies are expecting the adoption of BIM in their projects since they have
observed high ROI in BIM for vertical building projects. There are several barriers to
implementing BIM in infrastructure, including the cost of staff training, provision of software and
hardware, lack of understanding of BIM in the industry, lack of management support, lack of
skilled BIM staff, lack of software, fear, caution and ignorance. In this research, using previous
studies and the Delphi method and designing a questionnaire, barriers to BIM implementation in
the country's infrastructure projects have been investigated. Spss and SmartPLS software were
used to analyze the questionnaire data. According to the results of the questionnaire, barriers to
BIM implementation in the country's infrastructure projects have been identified and ranked.
standards and guidelines are required for accurate and correct implementation of BIM in the
infrastructure. Guidelines can be a standard format that accurately specifies requirements and
criteria and increases productivity. All existing BIM implementation guidelines in infrastructure
projects around the world have been reviewed. These guidelines include Australian, UK,
Queensland, Hong Kong and US standards. By comparative study between the instructions, the
items required to create the BIM implementation instructions in the country have been identified.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the barriers to BIM implementation in infrastructure
projects and to review the existing guidelines and identify the necessary items for a guideline to
implementing BIM in infrastructure projects in the country.
