In milling operations with long, slender endmills, it is verified
that most of the deflections encountered during machining were
concentrated in the tool [41]. Hence spindle/holder assembly can
be assumed quite rigid. Continuous model is comprised of an
Euler-Bernoulli beam and a set of translational and torsional
springs and dampers which represent the tool and tool/holder
interface, respectively. Since the interface parameters don’t
changed when tool length is altered in tool tuning case, the need
for FRF measurement for each tool length will be omitted by using
continuous model in predicting stability lobes. Moreover, this
model is an effective tool for studying the influence of micro slip, as
a nonlinear effect at tool/holder interface, on chatter vibrations.
The stable regions predicted by continuous model are in good
agreement with those computed by lumped parameter model.
