In today's world, unlike in the past, there is a view that future generations also have a share in
this world. We should not risk the lives of future generations for our better life today. This view
of future generations can be extended to the concept of sustainability, which means that one
should take steps in carrying out one's activities with the principles of sustainability. In this
regard, today one of the main leadership challenges facing business is the integration of
sustainability in the main business functions. One of the business functions is project
management. In current project management methods, project management is influenced by
the triple constraints; variables of time, cost and quality, and these three
dimensions clearly emphasize economic profit. Although social and environmental aspects may
have been considered as aspects of quality in some cases, these categories have been less
directly and independently examined and applied. Sustainability in project management is
about the integration of economic, social and environmental aspects in project management
and governance systems. Oil, gas and petrochemical projects take up a large amount of
financial, human and production equipment resources of the country and are designed and
implemented as megaprojects due to existing needs; But today, the processes of
implementing oil and gas projects have destructive effects on the environment, economy and
human societies, such as the excessive consumption of natural resources, the increase of
pollutants, the excessive waste of resources and their inefficient management, the loss of
human dignity, the lack of sufficient motivation among employees, etc. .. have become a
threat to the survival of life and the quality of business. Despite the effects mentioned,
sustainability has been proposed as a challenging option to solve the threats facing our time,
the most important of which is to balance the economic, social and environmental conditions
around the projects without harming the resources needed by future generations. The
evidence obtained from the failure of projects in this industry shows the need to investigate
the issue of sustainable development further. In other words, experience has shown that
sometimes senior managers in project-oriented organizations tend to observe and include
sustainability considerations in their project management, but they do not know what
measures and indicators they need to implement these considerations. Sustainability
assessment is increasingly considered an important tool to help change the path towards
sustainability. Sustainability assessment is a tool that can help decision-makers and
policymakers to decide what actions should and should not be taken to create a more
sustainable society. Therefore, in this research, the main goal is to provide a project
sustainability evaluation index that can help the senior managers of the organization and
project management to observe the sustainability of the project from the point of view of
different stakeholders and by analyzing it with knowledge and More awareness to include
sustainability considerations in the project. In this research, by using Swara's multi-criteria
decision-making methods and the best-worst method, the degree of importance of the
beneficiaries and sustainability criteria has been achieved, and further, it has proposed a
sustainability evaluation index, which separates the sustainability of the project by dimensions
and standards. An oil and gas project in South Pars has been measured. Interpreting the
results of this evaluation will help the project manager to identify and implement the wishes
and expectations of different stakeholders and to change the direction towards the
sustainability of the project with a correct and complete understanding.
