Accommodation is one of the basic human needs and has always been one of the most important concerns throughout history. Among the various approaches and methods proposed by architects for building shelters, prefab construction is one of the most efficient construction methods. This construction method was mainly proposed in the 20th century and offered a solution to reduce the cost and time of construction and increase quality and stability.
For the purpose of construction in far places, delivery in a shorter period of time or mass production is used, and the construction on the site advances the traditional design in the factory environment and in the form of modules or panels. The modular units produced in the factory can be used in several functions; such as residential units, residential complexes, exhibition stands, commercial units, medical centers emergency accommodations, etc. This research focuses on the design of the residential unit and then the design of the residential complex is discussed.
Following the development and progress of construction methods, human needs have also changed; including the need for flexible and adaptable spaces with changing needs over time, lower construction costs, better quality, etc. The main goal of this research is to coordinate the building with the future needs of users and design it as an open building, as well as create expandability and reducibility.
Reduction of costs and relocations due to the lack of housing changes when the family population increases or decreases, increasing stability and reducing damage to the environment during new construction, ensuring the comfort of users due to the ability to change spaces based on needs, ease of providing accommodation with the ability to expand in height and level and etc. show the necessity and importance of this type of housing.
In this research, various prefabrication methods and structural requirements of each, components and solutions have been extracted by analyzing the case studies. Based on the main goal of the research and the solutions above, a residential unit with special connections has been designed to create expandability. This superiority in the structure of the connections of modules has created the ability to assemble and disassemble, and based on this, the expandable residential complex in height and level has been designed.
