Innovation networks act as facilitators of collaboration across company boundaries, utilizing the sharing of ideas, knowledge, expertise, and opportunities as a powerful strategy to address complex or unsolvable problems, in order to open up the innovation cycle to various stakeholders. Our empirical study is guided by a primary question: What key activities and behaviors define the role of a facilitator in an innovation network? And what roles does a facilitator encompass in carrying out their activities?
In this study, our focus is on the Productivity network in Iran, which enables the participation of all stakeholders, including the public and private sectors, and network management refers to the productivity organization through facilitation and mediation activities. For this purpose, by using the existing model of the orchestration, the activities and roles of the facilitator orchestrator, which seeks to manage values and establish participation as a whole in a cooperation network with collective goals, are precisely determined. In the following, by studying relevant documents from the Productivity Organization and conducting approximately 10 semi-structured interviews with relevant experts, we were able to gather the necessary information. For data analysis and integration, the qualitative content analysis method and MaxQda software were used.
Finally, a network of topics in the field of activities and roles is presented to for the facilitator orchestrate in Iran's Productivity network. In this study, the facilitator orchestrator activities encompass seven overarching themes, including attracting network members, setting the agenda, motivating and sustaining the network, maintaining network stability, identity formation and legitimization of the network, coordination, and ensuring knowledge mobilization, all within the framework of three distinct roles: architect, leader, and liaison. This research can be used as a guide for setting up an innovation network and its management method for organizations, including productivity and other organizations that are trying to form a collaborative network.
