The poultry industry in Iran, as the second-largest industry after oil in terms of financial turnover, has a special strategic and economic importance. The increase in the price of red meat has made chicken meat a popular substitute in the Iranian food basket. Broiler breeding and chicken meat production, as one of the main elements of food supply and food security in the society, has attracted a lot of investment. Despite the stable domestic demand and access to neighboring markets with similar religious conditions, fluctuations in the supply and demand levels cause challenges and increase the final price of chicken meat. Also, sanctions, climate change, and international events have significant effects on the supply and production flow of this industry.
This research has evaluated the competitive advantage in the broiler breeding industry in Iran by presenting a model. After reviewing the literature and interviewing experts, 14 equally effective factors affecting the competitive advantage of this industry were identified. According to the opinions of a group of experts in this field, using the Delphi method, the desired combination of factors was designed in the form of nine factors (composite factors) including "human resource", "other resources", "business environment", "related and supporting industries", "demand", "government", "economic dimension of international relations", "unforeseen events" and "national culture".
Afterwards, using the DEMATEL method, the effects and relationships between these factors were determined. The factors of government, economic dimension of international relations, human resource, and demand were identified as causal factors and the factors of other resources and related and supporting industries were identified as effect factors. Also, the two factors of other resources and related and supporting industries had the highest impact and receptivity. The factors of unforeseen events and national culture, while having an impact on other factors, themselves did not receive any effect.
In order to evaluate the competitive advantage dimensions of these factors, a questionnaire was designed based on 72 indicators of them, which questioned the importance and current status of these indicators in the industry, and 34 experts completed it. The analysis of the importance-performance matrix results showed that the factors of human resource, demand, other resources, and related and supporting industries generally have high importance and appropriate performance; that is, the potential advantages of the industry lie in these factors. The business environment, national culture, and unforeseen events have acceptable performance and relative importance. The factors of government and the economic dimension of international relations with a high level of importance and a low level of performance are the priority for improvement.
