Having authentic, technical, and field-specific word lists at each academic community's is crucial, and yet contemporary issues that must be addressed. As such, this study aims to establish a specialized corpus to identify the most prevalent academic words, alongside their ten most likely collocations within a window span of five, leading to the development of the Sports Science Academic Word List (hereafter SSAWL). To do so, researchers identified top-tier journals of Sports Science and singled out those with the highest elite score (multiplying Impact Factor by Citation Score). Consequently, 50,000 research articles that followed the IMRD format (Swales, 1990), and published from 2013 to 2022 were included. Applying proportionate stratified random sampling, we included 10,000 articles, bringing about a Sports Science corpus with 42 million running words. We followed Coxhead’s (2000) criteria, To develop the academic word list, including range, frequency, and specialized occurrence. This process led to the identification of 770-word types. Also, all the core academic words were analyzed, identifying 7790 academic collocations. To secure the reliability of the results, a validatory corpus with 1,522,404 running words was further established. The implications for researchers, students, and EAP instructors of Sports Science are discussed.
