Human beings are inherently social an‎d dependent on relationships arising from social interactions. Residential complexes, due to their nature an‎d function, are considered among the most significant environments in sustaining an‎d developing social connections. However, in the contemporary era, with the rapid expansion of urbanization an‎d the transformation of traditional systems, human life is increasingly oriented toward privacy. Within residential complexes, public spaces constitute the primary setting for social interactions an‎d communications. Active participation of individuals in such environments enhances positive social interactions, thereby improving the quality of life through fostering cooperation an‎d civic engagement. The physical environment also possesses potential capacities to influence human behavior. In this regard, public an‎d open spaces in residential complexes provide opportunities for residents to gather, facilitating interpersonal interactions. Social sustainability in residential complexes refers to a condition in which residents feel satisfied with their homes an‎d communities, an‎d take pleasure in their neighborhood relationships. Over time, this condition strengthens social interactions, nurtures a sense of belonging, an‎d increases residents’ attachment to their living environment. In Iran, rapid population growth an‎d the resulting density have disrupted social interactions, leading to a decline in the effective use an‎d quality of open an‎d shared spaces within residential complexes. Therefore, designing communal spaces that adequately respond to human needs is a fundamental objective. This study examines the principles an‎d indicators of social sustainability in residential complexes, drawing upon previous research in the field. Ultimately, it proposes strategies for achieving social sustainability in shared spaces. By identifying factors that influence interaction between residents an‎d their living environment, this research seeks to enhance social engagement, strengthen residents’ sense of belonging, an‎d contribute to the creation of vibrant social spaces.
