Abstract
Vocabulary is the main building block of language use and language
learning. Every phrase of any length consists of words and without words no
verbal communication is possible. However, the number of words in any
language is a great one. Even the native speakers of any language do not
know the meaning of all the words in their language. However, according to
Register Analysis, language varies from context to context and different
registers use certain words and structures more frequently than others.
Therefore, materials developers in ESP (English for Specific Purposes)
should distinguish the most important vocabularies within their subjectspecific
areas and focus on them when preparing materials and textbooks for
their students. One of the main criteria for distinguishing the important
words is their frequency of occurrence. The present study attempts to work
out the most frequent, thus most important, words of EST (English for
Science and Technology) which is a branch of ESP.
