ABSTRUCT
In this work, the effect of Mn and Mg on the mechanical properties and
microstructure of Al-Si-Mg-Mn Casting Alloys has been investigated. For this
purpose, Mn and Mg have been used in the range of 0 to 0.8 wt%. Liquid treatment
such as fluxing, degassing, modifying and grain refining have been carried out. Sand
molds has been designed and manufactured to produce tensile test specimens. Also,
Some specimens were heat -treated (T6).
The microstructures of the alloys have been studied by means of optical and
scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical properties of different alloys have
been investigated in both non heat-treated and heat-treated conditions. All
intermetallic compounds formed during solidification have been investigated by use
of SEM/EDS. It has been found that the best mechanical properties obtained in the
alloy having Al-9%Si-0.25%Mg-0.35%Mn.
