Persistent schedule overruns remain a critical global challenge in the construction industry, with empirical studies indicating that approximately 80% of projects experience delays. Site engineers serve as the critical operational nexus between high-level planning and daily field execution , yet a significant gap exists in understanding how they select and effectively implement the expanding array of available time management techniques. This study, "An evaluation of Time Management Techniques Employed by Site Engineers in Construction Projects" , aims to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques and determine their impact on schedule performance.
The research will identify time management techniques currently used by site engineers—ranging from traditional methods like the Critical Path Method (CPM) to lean approaches like the Last Planner System (LPS) and digital tools like 4D BIM. It seeks to assess the measured effectiveness of these techniques on key schedule performance outcomes, including Percent Plan Complete (PPC) and Schedule Performance Index (SPI). Furthermore, the study will examine contextual factors that influence technique selection and successful use, such as project complexity and organizational maturity.
A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design will be employed. This approach will begin with quantitative surveys distributed to site engineers to measure adoption patterns and performance , followed by qualitative case studies that utilize semi-structured interviews and archival schedule data to explore implementation challenges and success factors. The anticipated contribution of this study is the development of an evidence-based, best-practice framework to guide site engineers and construction managers in selecting and applying time management techniques more effectively, thereby improving schedule reliability and addressing the persistent challenge of project time overruns.
