چکيده
The discharge of colored effluents from various industries poses a significant threat to water resources globally. Among these pollutants, cationic dyes are particularly concerning due to their high solubility, stability, and toxicity. Their presence in water bodies inhibits sunlight penetration, disrupts aquatic ecosystems, and poses risks to human health, including potential carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. While conventional wastewater treatment methods often fall short in effectively removing these persistent compounds, adsorption has emerged as a superior, efficient, and economically viable technique. This booklet provides a detailed scientific overview of the adsorption process for removing cationic dyes, with a special focus on Methylene Blue. It systematically explores the fundamental principles of adsorption, classifies and characterizes a wide range of adsorbents-from natural clays and agricultural waste to advanced synthetic polymers and nanocomposites-and elucidates the complex physico-chemical mechanisms governing the process. The factors influencing adsorption efficiency, such as pH, temperature, and adsorbent properties, are critically examined. A dedicated case study on rice husk demonstrates the practical application of a low-cost adsorbent. The booklet also evaluates the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of different adsorbent categories and concludes with future perspectives, highlighting the potential of hybrid materials, green synthesis, and advanced technologies in advancing this critical field of water purification.
