چکيده
The shift from 4G LTE to newer 5G and 6G systems, together with advances like
Wi-Fi 6/6E, targets faster speeds, lower delays, also wider support for diverse
gadgets and applications. Since available frequency space is tight, authorities plus
technical groups are turning more toward shared use of airwaves - allowing 5G’s
NR-U signals alongside Wi-Fi 6/6E in the 5 GHz and 6 GHz ranges. While most
existing work focuses on performance and quality of experience (QoE), the security
and privacy consequences of such coexistence have only recently been examined in
detail.
This seminar provides a structured, in-depth survey of security and privacy
vulnerabilities in 5G, prospective 6G, and Wi-Fi 6/6E, with explicit emphasis on
threats that arise or are amplified in coexistence environments. We first summarize
the architectures, protocol stacks, and spectrum sharing models of 5G/6G and Wi-Fi
6/6E, including NR-U and multi-radio access technology (multi-RAT) operation. We
then review vulnerabilities in standalone 5G systems at the physical, access, core,
slicing, and edge-computing layers, and standalone Wi-Fi 6/6E systems with a focus
on WPA2/WPA3 weaknesses such as Dragonblood and FragAttacks.
Next, we discuss how coexistence and unlicensed spectrum sharing modify the threat
surface. Independent medium-access control (MAC) protocols, hidden-node
conditions, and tolerance of out-of-network transmissions create opportunities for
spectrum hijacking, channel-access deterrence, service degradation, and pseudo
man-in-the-middle (pseudo-MitM) positions that are invisible to standalone security
frameworks.
Lastly, we review ways to reduce risks - like stronger physical-level safeguards,
combined layer improvements for 5G-AKA and WPA3, decentralized spectrum
control using blockchain, along with machine learning methods to spot interference-
related threats.
2
The seminar finds secure coexistence isnʹt just an added feature of individual
security, but a unique challenge; so upcoming 6G or IEEE 802.11be platforms
should prioritize it equally with speed and delay.
