چکيده
The construction industry is one of the largest consumers of natural resources and a major contributor to global CO₂ emissions, with aggregates making up about 70% of concrete volume and over 32 billion tons of concrete produced annually worldwide. Recycled aggregates have emerged as a sustainable alternative to reduce landfill dependency, conserve virgin materials, and lower embodied carbon. This seminar presents a comprehensive review of recycled aggregates in concrete applications, focusing on recycled concrete aggregate and recycled masonry aggregate. Physical and mechanical properties of recycled aggregates typically exhibit lower specific gravity, higher water absorption, and reduced compressive strength compared to natural aggregates, mainly due to the adhered old mortar layer. However, at replacement levels of 30% or less, strength loss is often negligible, especially when combined with supplementary cementitious materials or pre-treatment methods like carbonation. Concrete with recycled aggregates shows higher drying shrinkage and increased permeability, raising risks of chloride ingress and freeze-thaw damage. Nevertheless, real-world projects in Spain, Japan, and Qatar demonstrate successful use in foundations, pavements, and non-structural walls. Life cycle assessments confirm that recycled aggregates can significantly reduce global warming potential by up to 42% in optimal scenarios particularly when processed near demolition sites to minimize transport emissions. The main goal of this seminar is to examine the most prominent studies in the field of recycled aggregates and to identify key studies that require further expansion and scientific gaps that should be addressed in future research.
