Abstract
Aliabad garden is one of the gardens which was built during Qajar period by Bojnord’s Ruler, Sardar Mofakham, as a place for hunting, rest and recreation. In addition to Aliabad garden, there are other gardens that were built in Bojnord, however, unfortunately to date there are almost no traces from them. Aliabad garden has been subjected dramatic changes during its evolutionary history and what can be observed now is a small palace in the middle of the garden without any trace of Persian garden prosperity. Poor maintenance of such gardens could cause undesirable results such as inadequate understanding about space-creation in the garden-making art, and in turn this misconception could suffer their real and original faces. On the other hand, lack of attention to these gardens may lead to the gradual loss of historical documents of cities, which imposes irrecoverable damages.
With recognition of the remaining original outlines, and restoration the garden to its real condition, despite the preservation of historical identity of Bojnord, a diligent has been accomplished for recalling a part of the art and culture of this country, which can be a manifestation of characteristics of the art during the past time. Therefore, in this thesis a comprehensive study has been done for reaching to a true understanding regarding Bojnord’s Aliabad garden. To this aim, an effort has been implemented for a meticulous study of historical documents such as logbooks, historical books and pictures, plus investigation of current situation using the existing models and urban plans, and finally fieldworks practices such as exploring of extensions, changes, destructions, providing new pictures and modifying existing maps.
Since the restoration activities may be affected by the previous measures, and would be important for the next steps, thus, being familiar with the previous measures and revising the current activities in order to make suitable decisions in the future are essential tasks. Consequently, in this study a criticism will be done and final model will be presented based on investigations, recognitions and existing criticisms on previous in-country models (Yazd’s Dolatabad garden and previous published models regarding the current case).
